So you are thinking about or just started hauling boats for a living. If you are just starting, then welcome. This site will try to help you out learning on what to do,? and how to do it. After you get the hang of it. Then you will be able to figure out better ways of doing things. These tutorials will be one persons way of doing things.
Okay, Now back to starting up to haul boats. It is not as easy as pulling a box van or loading a step deck or flat bed. There is a lot more to it. Yes, at first if you never hauled a boat or oversize you will get legal loads that are already loaded for you or someone else has loaded. That way you can sort of get an ideal on how they do it. But don't think that will happen always. You will have to learn on how to load boats on your own. You have chosen to haul boats so you need to learn on how to do it all and all by yourself.
You will get nervous for a while on loading boats. You may say you won't and that is Okay, That will be your story. But the truth is, everyone does on there first few times or for a while in other cases. But within time you will get use to it and just like anything you do over and over. It will all become nature to you.
These are boats. They are not cars or tractors. They are 99% of the time not made of steal. They are easy to crack, puncture, scratch, or scrap. You are carrying a really big egg shell. They are not cheap. Most boat we haul are a lot more then cars.
You will need to learn on how to set steel. Where to place that steel so it will hold the boat safely. You will need to learn how to strap the boat down to your trailer. I am hoping in time there will be a good bit of tutorials to help you out on Boat Transporters.
Besides the load, the driving when hauling a boat is different as well. You are hauling something everyone wants, or likes. So some will gock at the boat. Some will video or take pictures of the boat going down the road. That means they are not paying attention to where they are going. Most times they start heading right where they are looking. That is at you hauling the boat. They will not catch on that they are about to hit the boat. The bigger the boat the worse it will get. So you need to watch out for them.
Our trailers are not normal. Our tires are set way back. Our fifth wheel is set way back. That means you are a lot longer then a normal truck and trailer. Some of our trailers are wide too. Most of our low air rides are 9ft 3inch or wider at the tires. (Our trailer T-119 is 12ft wide). A normal everyday box van is only 8ft 6inch. We take up more room to turn. We also stick out a lot more when parked for the night at a truck stop. You will need to know your trailer and where it is at all times. You will get use to the trailer that you have and then have to trade trailers. All trailers are set up a little different. That means they will ride different too. So you will get use to the trailer you have and then have to learn a different one.
You will have to make sure you have the steel you are going to need on what ever trailer you are hauling. It will really look bad if you show up at a place to load a boat and you do not have the equipment to haul the boat. That means you will have to move steel around a lot. Because we change out trailers a lot. You can't say you will not get exercise. You will get more then normal exercise hauling a boat then you do with any reefer or box van. With a flat bed or a step deck you may need to tarp and yes that is heavy. But hauling boats you will always be putting up and taking down steel. Moving steel from trailer to trailer.
This is just the beginning of it. Hauling boat is not for everyone. Be sure this is something you can do before you decide to go though with it. There is a lot more work in hauling boat then any other trucking job. |
